CHILDREN & GANGSTERS & NAZIS!
OH, MY!
I am pleased to announce the publication of my newest book, AUNT ADDIE, which is available via Amazon in paperback and Kindle editions, as well as through other booksellers
Set in 1939 New York and inspired, in part, by the plight of the MS ST. LOUIS (VOYAGE OF THE DAMNED), this warm and funny Damon Runyon-like fable deals with Addie Russell, a lady nightclub owner, who takes under her wing two orphaned Jewish refugee children. The children are in the country illegally, and are also being pursued by a Nazi agent because, unknown to them, they have in their possession a vital piece of microfilm.
The story is populated with nasty gangsters, comic gangsters and, of course, a handsome F.B.I. man to serve as Addie's romantic interest.
If you enjoyed GUYS AND DOLLS and the lighthearted Warner Brothers gangster films (like A SLIGHT CASE OF MURDER and BROTHER ORCHID) of the late thirties, then this one should delight you.

Blu-Ray Review: MAN WITHOUT A STAR

I just watched the new Blu-Ray release of MAN WITHOUT A STAR from Kino Lorber:
Directed by King Vidor, MAN WITHOUT A STAR (1955) is a handsome, entertaining color Western that stars Kirk Douglas as a rugged wandering cowboy, who winds up in the middle of a bloody range war.
Jeanne Crain plays Douglas’ wealthy employer, the new owner of a huge ranch; Claire Trevor is Kirk’s “close” friend, the local madam; Richard Boone is the brutal gunman hired by Crain to make sure her fellow ranchers don’t threaten the open range by stringing barb wire; and William Campbell is an inexperienced drifter who Douglas “takes under his wing,” only to have the youth turn on him.
Also in the cast are Jay C. Flippen, Mara Corday, Myrna Hansen and Jack Elam.
MAN WITHOUT A STAR has several good action sequences, as well as a fair share of humor. Doulas even sings in one scene.
Extras on the Blu-Ray disc from Kino Lorber include audio commentary by film historian Toby Roan and the theatrical trailer.
