HOPE GAP

HOPE GAP is a beautifully photographed, marvelously acted drama about a depressing subject: Divorce.
Adapted from a stage play, the film
stars Annette Bening and Bill Nighy as a long-married (29 years) British
couple, who appear to be living a docile life together. They have a grown son (Josh O’Connor), who resides
in the city and visits occasionally.
One day, after a quarrel, Nighy, a
school teacher, announces that he wants a divorce. In fact, he’s been having an affair with a
fellow teacher for over a year.
Bening becomes totally unraveled at the rejection, and it is only her son who keeps her from doing something desperate.
A major co-star in HOPE GAP is the sea side scenery, particularly the spectacular White Cliffs of Dover.
William Nicholson wrote and directed the semi-autobiographical film, released onto DVD by Screen Media.
